COVID-19 Yellow Phase Q&A

Allegheny County enters the Yellow Phase on May 15. Although some businesses will be opening on that date, Moon Library will remain closer until further notice.

Q: Why won’t you be open on May 15?

A: The Office of Commonwealth Libraries is the governing body of all PA public libraries and to ensure the safety of library staff and patrons as well as a return to smooth and effective operations, they have mandated a several week preparation period for staff only.

Q: Can I return my books yet? Can I make book donations?

A: Right now, our book drop is closed and will remain so until we are told by the Office of Commonwealth Libraries and Allegheny County Library Association that we can begin checking materials in. We will keep you updated on a date for returns. All donations are suspended indefinitely.

Q: When can I come back into the library?

A: Unfortunately, it’s going to be a quite a while before we can offer face-to-face services. We will reopen in phases. Phase one will be a version of curbside & contact-free pickups. Again, we do not have a clear timeline on this as we have to wait for state library plans and approvals but we will make sure to have constant updates for everyone!

Q: What about programs and Summer Reading?

A: For the foreseeable future, our programming will remain virtual. We will move our yearly summer reading program online and are developing a lot of fun, innovative programs for the coming months. When the time comes, we will have some interactive take & make kits available.

Q: How is the library going to change because of COVID-19?

A: Once physical borrowing is allowed, all returned materials will be sanitized and held in isolation for at least 48 hours before they are circulated again. Plexiglass guards will be erected at the circulation desk and computers will be rearranged to ensure social distancing. All staff will wear masks and gloves to ensure we are protecting patrons and each other.

Q: How can I continue to support the library?

A: Be patient and understanding of the unique situation that the library is in right now. Keep checking out books on OverDrive & Libby, use our e-resources, and participate in online activities. Plus, you can still make monetary donations to help us maintain adequate public funding.
